Syndicates have captured the sacrificial cattle markets in the city ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
A trader said that he got lease of some temporary cattle markets in the past. But this year, syndicates blocked him from dropping tender.
As a result, genuine businessmen failed to get lease of any temporary cattle market.
The businessmen alleged that political leaders and musclemen formed syndicates in every cattle market. These syndicates caught hold of everything regarding getting lease of cattle markets.
As a result, the government has been deprived of real revenue.
When contacted, Mohammad Kamrul Islam Chowdhury, the Chief Estate Officer of Dhaka South City Corporation told The New Nation, “We have allotted the temporary sacrificial cattle markets on certain rules.”
He claimed that the DSCC had given lease to those who dropped the tenders qouting higher rates.
The Chief Estate Officer of Dhaka North City Corporation said in the same tone.
He said, “It is not true that the city corporation allotted temporary cattle markets to party men. We were neutral while allotting the markets. We only follow the rules of tenders during the allocations.”
According to city corporations, as many as 13 cattle markets are set up in the areas under the DSCC while the DNCC has nine temporary markets other than permanent cattle market at Gabtoli.
The DSCC has set up markets at Haji Delowar Hossain Maath (playground), Sadek Hossain Khoka Maath at Dholaikhal, Hazaribagh-Jhigatola, East-End Club at Dhupkhola , Maitrisangha Maath at Uttar Shajahanpur, Khilgaon Meradia Maath, Gopibagh Balu Maath, Postagola crematorium area, Islam Chairman Bari area at Kamrangirchar, Jatarbari, the open space near Kamalapur Railway Station and the new one in Kamrangirchar Beribadh area.
The chief estate officer of DNCC said that they have allotted 11 markets to the highest bidders.
The tender box for rest four markets will be opened on August 21. It was the than third time tender was invited, he added. Those markets are Gopibag, Kamlapur, Armanitola and Sadek Hossain Khoka Maath.
Meanwhile the chief estate officer of DNCC said the city corporation has nine temporary markets, including two new ones at Basila in Mohammadpur and DOHS area.
The seven old markers are Mirpur Eastern Housing area, Sonargaon Janapath Road at Uttara, Banarupa Housing area, Bhashantek, 300-Foot Road, Agargaon-Taltola and the open space at Banani Asian city area.
He said, the seven cattle markets of DNCC has been allotted to the higher bidders.
“We have sent the details of rest two markets at Banarupa and open space near Asian city market to the ministry as we had no bidders even during third time with our tender prices,” Aminul Islam said.
According to officials, the city corporations have earned Tk 14,1,69,763 as revenue from the 18 temporary markets.
According to two city corporations as many as 3,61,410 cattle were sacrificed in the city last year.
