Extortion in market alleged: Sacrificial animals pouring from neighbouring countries in Ctg market

Huge sacrificial animals from nearby Myanmar , India and Nepal are reaching the cattle markets in port city Chittagong. Despite having adequate number of local cattle in Chittagong, the cattle from Myanmar ,Nepal and India are reaching Chittagong every day.
According to sources, the demand of sacrificial animal for upcoming holy Eid-ul Azha is likely to be more than six lakh. The District Livestock Department and Chittagong District Administration hoped that a total 5.91lakh cattle are likely to be sacrificed during upcoming Eid.
The authorities concern are preparing the arrangement for temporary hats, treatments of cattle etc from now. Sources said, the district administration are going to arrange a total of 250 cattle markets for selling cattle for upcoming Eid ul Azha.
The number of approved cattle markets for selling cattle was 240 last year while there were several hundred illegal cattle markets in city and rural arrears in Chittagong. However, with the approved 250 cattle markets, there may be several hundreds of illegal small cattle markets in the current year also, the locals and dwellers said.
According to the sources in district administration, the Chittagong dwellers sacrificed a total of 5.40 lakh cattle in last year. But, the administration hoped that in the current year the number of sacrificed cattle will be 10 percent more.
 District Livestock Officer Rezaul Haque said, the number of sacrificial cattle will be more than 5.9 lakh in upcoming Eid. “We hope that at least 10 percent will be increased in the current year.”
He said a total of 250 cattle markets for selling cattle for upcoming Eid will be set up. The number of approved cattle markets for selling cattle was 240 last year. “We have sent letters to the authorities concerned including the Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Science University for 80 physicians for the sacrificial cattle.
We have to ensure the disease free cattle in the cattle markets of Chittagong in the upcoming Eid,” he added.
Meanwhile, Chittagong District Administration has taken decision to control the law and order and extortion in the cattle markets ahead of Eid.
DC of Chittagong Mohammad Zillur Rahman Chowdhury said that no illegal cattle market can be set up in the city or rural areas. He is very concern over the illegal cattle markets and extortion in cattle markets in the current year.
Extortion in cattle market
The cattle traders are suffering from extortion and being compelled to sell their cattle’s as per the wishes of the lease of temporary cattle markets in Chittagong.
Cattle traders alleged that they could not take their cattle’s to the hats as per their choices. The leases of cattle market at their hats from the truck. The leases of cattle market are using their cadres in this regard. As a result, the cattle traders who came from different areas in the country particularly from the North Bengal areas could not go to their choice hats of cattle in the port city.
Talking to this correspondent Shahidul Alam, a cattle trader coming from North Bengal with 50 cattle said, “The cadres compelled me to stay Pahartoli. The cadres also did not allow me to send some cattle to Steel Mills Bazar and any other hats.”
Sources said, cadres of the leases of cattle market are staying at Colonel Hat point, Alonker Point, Cement Crossing point, Ihashan Mistriur Hat point any other points to resist the movement of cattle by the traders. So, the cattle traders are being sufferer in the port city Chittagong in the current year.
On the other hand, despite the declaration of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) and Chittagong District administration to stop all types of extortion in the cattle markets, the cadres of ruling party and the lease of hats are being engaged with extortion in Chittagong ahead of Eid-ul- Azha. Sources said, the cattle traders have to pay Tk one thousand per truck cattle to enter the city area. Later, if any cattle trader sell a cattle, he has to pay more Tk one thousand to the cadres. It is reported that some of the dishonest policemen are also collecting extortion on behalf of the cadres and lease of hats.
Kamrul Hasan, another cattle trader alleged that he came to Chittagong with 100 cattle to sell. But, already paid more than Tk 5,000 to the cadres. Besides, he has to paid bribes to policemen for landing the cattle from truck in markets.
Meanwhile, CMP directed not to arrange temporary cattle hat on the roads for upcoming Eid-ul- Azha. As a result, the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) cannot give lease sufficient cattle hats temporarily in the current year for meeting the demand of the city dwellers in Chittagong.
 Iqbal Bahar, the Commissioner of CMP said that the CMP directed not to arrange any temporary cattle market on the roads in the port city for Eid-ul- Azha in the current year. He said, “CMP took steps in this regard to mitigate the sufferings that created for traffic jam. The temporary cattle hats must be arranged on the open ground in the city. If anybody arranges the cattle hats on the road, action will be taken against him.”
He said many temporary cattle hats were arranged on the roads in the city in previous years. “But, we are trying to introduce a system from the current year.”
On the other hand, a meeting on law and order of Chittagong District Administration chaired by the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Chittagong Mohammad Zillur Rahman Chowdhury held last week.
It may be mentioned that there are eight cattle markets in the port city in the current year. There are two regular cattle market Bibirhat and Sagarika and six irregular cattle market-Soltgola, Katgar, Still Mill, Karnaphuly bridge, and Komol Kantir hat in the port city area. Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) earned around taka four lakh from the leasee of the five irregular hats every year.
The two permanent Cattle hats Pahartoli Sagorika Cattle Market and Bibir Hat Cattle Market leased for one year. Other five temporary Cattle hats were leased for only nine days before the Eid-ul- Azha. The CCC approved the lease of Pahartoli Sagorika Cattle Market and Bibirhat Cattle Market for one year.
The CCC earned money for lease from Saltgolla Cattle Market, Steel Mills Bazar, Katgor Bazar, Komol Kantir hat and Karnaphuly bridge Cattle Market for nine days lease.
Around five hundred cattle market including regular and temporary are organized in the 14 upazila areas in the district before the Eid-ul-Azha. Around 200 regular cattle traders supplied cattle in these hats. Besides, hundreds of irregular cattle traders supplied cattle in these cattle markets.
