Staff Reporter :
Police have launched an extensive investigation to know the mystery behind the abnormal state of Naraynganj Mayor Dr Salina Hayat Ivy’s official car as she narrowly escaped fatal accident after six nut bolts of a rear wheel slacked off.
Usually, six nut bolts of a wheel cannot loose or open at a time, if someone intentionally had done it. Investigators suspect that it may be an incident of assassination attempt.
Officials said mayor Ivy was heading towards Dhaka from Narayanganj to pay tributes to late Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Annisul Huq on December 2. As the car reached Banani area, the driver stopped the vehicle hearing an unusual sound.
It was found that three out of six nuts of a wheel went missing while the rest found loosened.
Officer-in-Charge [investigation] of Naraynganj Model Police Station Abdur Razzak, who is also the Investigation Officer [IO] of the case, said they have already met Mayor Ivy, her car driver Billal Hossain, workshop technicians and mayor’s bodyguards in this regard.
“I can’t tell you exactly what had happened. Everything will be clear after the investigation is completed,” the IO added.
Expressing concern, Dr Ivy on Friday said the incident of losing six nut bolts at a time is a matter of horror. “It needs thorough investigation to unearth the reason,” she said.
Echoing the same, several leaders of Narayanganj Awami League have urged the authority concerned to investigate the matter whether it was deliberately done by anyone for sabotage.
Sources close to the police said there is a big chance to loosen the wheel nuts on the way. If the nuts were loosened in Naraynaganj, the car could not be reached near Banani crossing, such a long way.
Meanwhile, a four-member probe body headed by NCC engineer Azgar Hossain has been formed to investigate the incident. It has been asked to submit its report as soon as possible.
NCC Chief Executive Office Ehteshamul Haque said the investigation committee has been asked to submit its report on an emergency basis.
When contacted, Superintendent of Police of Naraynganj Mainul Haque said the police are investigating the case giving high importance to two relevant matters – whether the nuts were loosened by someone as an act of sabotage, or it was a technical fault. President of Naraynganj Citizens’ Committee advocate AB Siddique said it was nothing but a deep-rooted conspiracy.
