When the poor family members were passing their days hard, almost going without regular food, the housewife started nursing a black Bengal goat which helped her developing a farm with 110 goats in a Jhenaidah village.
Housewife Sabiata Adhikary set an example farming huge number of black Bengal goats in her house. A several hundred house wives have started goat farming commercially witnessing the success of Sabita in the surrounding villages.
The “movement” initiated by Sabita might encourage other women in other areas of the country, expected the livestock department officials and learned people in Jhenaidah.
Sabaita Adhikary, 43, wife of Radhapada Adhikary of Shailmari village in Jhenaidah Sadar upazila said, belongs to a poor family, she was married at the age of 18 where the financial condition of her husband was not suitable. The poverty stricken family was leading their lives in hardship.
As they did not have enough money, started nursing a female species of local variety goat, widely known as Black Bengal. Since then they were marching ahead with their goat farming activities.
Sabita said, the number of the goats in her farm was 110 including minor and pregnant ones. She is expecting selling of about 25 during the current Eid. They sale 20 to 30 matured goats for Taka two lakh to two and a half lakh in the locality every year.
According to the industrious woman, she has been maintaining the educational expenses for her two daughters and built a building house for themselves with the sale proceeds from the Black Bengal goats.
Sabita said, her husband Radhapada Adhikary has been playing role in strengthening the financial base of the family as he remain engaged in grazing and nursing the goats always.
Radhapada Adhikary said, Sabita’s activities brought a great success in the surrounding villages and a few hundred families of Chandipur, Betai and some other villages were involved with nursing the Black Bengal goats witnessing the success of Sabita, the husband said.
The couple said, a kid of the goat costs Taka 3 thousand to 4 thousand in 2 and a half year to become fit for sale, while each of the goat was sold at taka 8,000 to 9,000. The male counter parts of the women were also contributing abide the women.
District Livestock Officer Dr. Hafizur Rahman when contacted admitted the farming of Black Bengal goats in Shailmari and surrounding areas of Jhenaidah Sadar upazila.
He said, It has been helping meeting the demand of the meat as well as strengthening national economy as the same had a great demand country wide. His department has been assisting the family in needs, the DLO said.
