SAARC Agriculture Centre meeting held

The 9th Meeting of the Governing Board (GB) of SAARC Agriculture Centre (SAC) held on 18-20 October 2015 in Dhaka with a view to developing science based strategy for collective response to threat, challenges and opportunities and global shocks.
Addressing as the chief guest, Shyamal Kanti Ghosh, Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture inaugurated the opening session. Dr. Abul Kalam Azad, Executive Chairman of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC) presented as special guest.
SM Anisul Haque, Director-General (SAARC & BIMSTEC), Ministry of Foreign Affairs, MJ H Jabed, Director, SAARC Secretariat were present the meeting. The Meeting was presided over by Dr. Md. Kabir Ikramul Haque, Member of SAC Governing Board.
Addressing the welcome speech, Dr. S M Bokhtiar, Director of SAC welcomed all the delegates from SAARC member countries.
He pointed out a brief description of important programs of SAC and its recent activities. Her also highlighted the SAC’s activities of 2015 and expressed his hope that the GB Members would provide valuable guidance for implementing SAC programs in the coming years.
Shyamal Kanti Ghosh, Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture said, SAC could play a key role in regional cooperation. He offered the support from Bangladesh to the regional agriculture development. He congratulated SAC and professionals of Member States for their contribution in agricultural development in the region.
Dr. Abul Kalam Azad, Executive Chairman of BARC expressed his satisfaction on the progress of SAC. He mentioned the benefits of the regional adaptive trials on vegetable, oilseed, rice, cluster bean and pulses which the Centre has been initiated. Highlighting the importance of food security and poverty alleviation in the region, he mentioned the role of SAC is vital.
SM Anisul Haque, Director General of SAARC and BIMSTEC focused the importance of SAC as agriculture is an important agenda of the SAARC member states. He has underscored the need for undertaking joint initiative to develop agriculture sector in the region.
MJH Jabed, Director, SAARC Secretariat, Nepal expected that GB members will extend all possible support and guidance to take forward SAC and its program in future.
