South Africa (SA) scored 278 for the loss of five wickets against Bangladesh in the first innings on the first day of the second Test at Saint George’s Park in Port Elizabeth of South Africa on Friday.
Electing to bat first, the two openers of the hosts Dean Elgar and Sarel Erwee had a good start as they put on together 52 runs before Sarel (24) was caught behind by wicketkeeper Liton Das off pacer Khaled Ahmed.
After Sarel’s dismissal, Dean Elgar and Keegan Petersen added together 81 runs for the second wicket partnership before Elgar was caught behind by Liton Das off leg-spinner Taijul Islam when the Proteas’ total was 133 for the loss of two wickets.
Elgar notched up a fine 70. His 89-ball innings
was belted with 10 fours. After Elgar’s departure, Petersen and Temba Bavuma put on together 51 runs in the third wicket stand before Petersen was trapped leg before wicket by Taijul Islam when the hosts’ score was 184 for the loss of three wickets.
Petersen knocked a sedate 64. His 124-ball innings had nine fours.
After Petersen’s removal, Temba Bavuma and Ryan Rickelton scored together 83 runs for the fourth wicket partnership before Ryan was caught by Yasir Ali off Taijul Islam when the home side’s total was 267 for the loss of four wickets. Ryan made 42 from 82 deliveries featuring three fours and a sixer.
After Ryan’s dismissal, Temba Bavuma was caught at the slip by Najmul Hossain Shanto off Khaled Ahmed when South Africa’s score was 271 for the loss of five wickets. Bavuma knocked a painstaking 67. His 162-ball innings saw seven fours.
Kyle Verreynne remained unbeaten with 10 runs, while Wiaan Mulder remained unbeaten with naught.
Taijul Islam grabbed three wickets at the cost of 77 runs, while Khaled Ahmed bagged two wickets in the space of 59 runs.
