South Africa were dismissed for 453 in the first innings against Bangladesh on the second day of the second Test match at Saint George’s Park in Port Elizabeth of South Africa on Saturday.
Left-arm spinner Taijul Islam was his team’s most successful bowler. He finished his superb spell as 50-10-135-6.
Later, Bangladesh fought back scoring 139 for the loss of five wickets before the bails were drawn for the second day.
Bangladesh trailed by 314 runs.
Bangladesh had a sorrow start as opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy (0) was caught at the first slip by Sarel Erwee off Duanne Olivier when the tourists’ score was just three runs.
After Joy’s departure, opener Tamim Iqbal and Najmul Hossain Shanto mended the innings contributing together 79 runs
in the second wicket stand before Tamim was trapped leg before wicket by Wiaan Mulder when Bangladesh’s total was 82 for the loss of two wickets.
Tamim hit a sparkle 47. His 57-ball innings was decorated with eight fours.
After Tamim’s departure, Shanto could stay at the crease for a short period as he was trapped leg before wicket by Mulder when the visitors’ score was 85 for the loss of three wickets.
Shanto made 33 from 74 balls featuring six fours.
After Shanto’s dismissal, Mominul Haque (6) was trapped leg before wicket by Mulder when the touring side’s total was 100 for the loss of four wickets.
After Mominul Haque’s departure, Liton Das ( 11) was bowled out by Olivier when Bangladesh’s total was 122 for the loss of five wickets.
Mushfiqur Rahim remained unbeaten with 30 runs, while Yasir Ali remained unbeaten with eight runs.
Mulder grabbed three wickets at the cost of 15 runs, while Olivier bagged two wickets in the space of 17 runs.
Earlier, South Africa resumed their first innings with the over-night score of 278 for the loss of five wickets.
Kyle Verreynne and Wiaan Mulder resumed their first innings with the over-night score of 10 and naught respectively.
Kyle could add more 12 runs on the second day as he was bowled out by Khaled Ahmed when the hosts’ total was 300 for the loss of six wickets.
After Kyle’s removal, Mulder and Keshav Maharaj added together 80 runs for the seventh wicket partnership before Mulder (33) was bowled out by Taijul Islam when South Africa’s score was 380 for the loss of seven wickets.
After Mulder’s departure, Maharj and Simon Harmer built another notable partnership. They put on together 38 runs in the eight-wicket stand before Maharaj was bowled out by Taijul Islam when the Proteas’ total was 418 for the loss of eight wickets.
Maharaj hit a splendid 84. His 95-ball innings saw three sixes and nine fours.
After Maharj’s dismissal, Harmer and Lizaad Williams scored together 35 runs for the ninth wicket partnership before Harmer (29) was stumped out by wicketkeeper Liton Das off Taijul Islam when the home side’s score was 453 for the loss of nine wickets.
Lizaad Williams (13) was trapped leg before wicket by Mehidy Hasan Miraz when South Africa’s innings came to an end.
