Chittagong Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (CWASA) will construct a new water supply plant in Bhandal Jhuri to meet the growing demand for water in the port city, and among industries on the left side of Karnaphuli River.
South Korean consultant firm DongMyeong Engineering Consultants and Architecture Company Ltd, Korea & Consortium won the tender as consultant for the construction of the project worth Tk1,036.3 crore. The consultant company will be paid Tk48.82 crore.
The project will be financed mostly by Korean Exim Bank.
The water plant project, which includes a 60 kilometres water transmission line, a water treatment plant and two water reservoirs, will generate some 60 million litres of water daily.
The project has started since October 2015 and will end by September 2020.
The proposal for construction of the “Bhandal Jhuri Water Supply Project” will be placed before Cabinet Committee on Public Purchase in next meeting.
Local Government Ministry officials said the Chittagong WASA currently meets only 72percent demand for water. The demand will rise soon because of the growing number of industries in Chittagong.
Chittagong WASA has been supplying around 200 million litres of water from Mohora Water Plant through pipelines, against 500-550 million litre demand daily. The demand usually increases if the temperature continues to rise.
Currently, the CWASA has 10percent non-domestic and 90percent domestic users, said a source.
Beside the water treatment plant, WASA is supplying water in the port city from 45 deep tube wells.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated a water treatment plant, capable of purifying 140 million litres of water every day, in Chittagong in March.
The water treatment plant named “Sheikh Hasina Water Treatment Plant” was constructed in an area of over 35 acres of land on the bank of Karnaphuli River at Pomra area under Rangunia upazila, about 45km from Chittagong city.
Financed by Japan International Cooperation Agency, the project was implemented at a total cost of Tk1,848.52 crore.
Earlier, the Chittagong WASA had the capacity to produce 180 million litres of water daily. Now it generates 320 million litres of water per day.
