RECENTLY, two superpowers Russia and China have expressed interest for a peaceful solution to the Rohingya crisis making deeper engagement in implementing the bilateral agreements between Bangladesh and Myanmar. Ambassadors of two countries had shown their eagerness in this regard in separate meetings with Foreign Minister in Dhaka. The suffering of the host community in Cox’s Bazar becomes acute while Myanmar has been wasting time showing various excuses in creating an environment conducive for repatriation of the religious minority community. Dhaka also hoped that both the superpowers would actively engage with Myanmar for facilitating the resumption of the repatriation process that had hindered twice since November last year. Bangladesh stressed strong efforts for reconciliation between returnee Rohingya people and members of the majority Buddhist community for permanent solutions to the crisis.
Our views in this regard are clear. We hope Russia and China, two veto-powered countries, would come forward to save the oppressed and the persecuted Rohingya Muslim people without wasting any more time. Both the countries must create pressure on Myanmar government to take back its Rohingya nationals now staying in Bangladesh as refugees.
