Hosts Russia beat ill-fated Spain by 4-3 goals in the tie-breaker in their Round of 16 matches at the FIFA World Cup Russia 2018 at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, Russia on Sunday.
After yesterday’s outcome, Russia booked their place in the quarter-finals, while unfortunate Spain were out of the World Cup 2018.
The pre-lemon session saw 1-1 draw.
Russia conceded an own goal by Sergei Ignashevich in the 11th minute of the match.
Artem Dzyuba of Russia leveled the margin by a penalty kick in the 41st minute of the encounter.
After the first half, Spain and Russia got a good number of chances but players of the both teams failed to convert them into goal.
The stipulated ninety-minute match ended in a 1-1.
In the extra-time Spain dominated over Russia and created some attacks but they failed to broke the tight Russian defence specially Russian custodian.
As the extra-time ended in a 1-1 draw, the fate of the match was decided in the tie-breaker. And Russia registered much-awaited victory in the penalty shoot-out.
It may be mentioned that Spain had 79% ball possession, while Russia had just 21% ball possessions.
Spain hit 24 shots to the Russian goalpost, while Russia hit seven shots to Spanish goalbar.
