Flood-hit farmers worried for extensive crop damage: Low-lying areas around Dhaka also inundating

The flood situation has improved slightly in several parts of the country, while it remained unchanged in some other parts, according to reports reaching here. The water flow in several rivers decreased on Tuesday, while the flow was increased in some other rivers, added the reports. Several lakhs of flood-hit people are still marooned and they are not getting relief materials and other assistances according to their needs. For this reason, they are facing acute crisis of dry food and pure drinking water. Alongside with the problem, the outbreak of waterborne diseases is now also seen in several parts of the flood affected areas. Locals urged the government to rush relief materials immediately to resolve the problem.The flood also adversely affected the Aman paddy, vegetables and seedlings in different areas. The farmers are concerned over the extensive damage of the Aman paddy and other crops. Meanwhile, the flood water is entering the capital city after affecting the other parts of the country. The flood is likely to submerge some low-lying areas around the city as water of all the rivers around the city– Buriganga, Turag, Shitalakkhya and Balu– will rise, according to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC).  The flood water is entering the city following collapse of a link road at Madartake at Basabo. The road collapsed suddenly and the water of Balu River is entering as a result of the road collapse. The people of the area are concerned over enter of the Balu river water. The FFWC officials said that the water flow in the Jamuna and Brahmaputra rivers in Sirajganj and Sariakandi of Shariatpur decreased. For this reason, the downstream water is coming to upstream through Balu River. So, the water is rising in the river. In Sylhet, the flood situation remained unchanged in several upazilas of the district. Fresh areas in the upazilas went under flood water on Monday, while many people of the areas were marooned also on Tuesday, as water of the Surma river was flowing over the danger mark. The flood water inundated vast areas of Kanaighat, Golapganj and some other parts of the district. In Sunamganj, the flood situation remained unchanged in several parts of the district, while it was improved in several other parts. The water of Surma and other rivers had inundated vast areas of eight upazilas of the districts. The upazilas are Duyarabazar, Tahirpur, Biswambapur, Jamalganj, Sunamganj Sadar, South Sunamganj, Dharmapasha and Chhatak. The flood situation was improved slightly in some parts of the upazilas on Tuesday, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Sunamganj Sheikh Rafiqul Islam said. Over 2 lakh people in the upazilas are still marooned. At least 20,000 families were affected directly. People are not getting relief. They took shelter in open places. The local administration distributed rice and cash money to the affected area, which are insufficient compared to the needs.In Shariatpur, the Padma is flowing over 28 cm of damager level at Shureshwar point of the district. Dwellers in char areas could not move to safe shelters. They need safe shelter if water level increases further. In Munshiganj, the flood situation deteriorated further. Flood water increased by five points at Bhagyakul point and the Padma was flowing over 16 cm of danger level. Fresh areas of Srinagar, Lauhajang and Tongibari upazilas went under flood water marooning many people. DC of Munshiganj Md Saiful Hasan said that the government has allocated 100 tons of rice for the flood affected people.In Jamalpur, the overall flood situation in ten unions in Islampur and Dewanganj upazilas of the district remained unchanged as the water level in the Jamuna River was stable. Water Development Board (WDB) sources said that the Januma was flowing 27 cm above the danger level at Bahadurabad Ghat point.According to District Relief and Rehabilitation office sources, over 71,000 people in nine unions in Islampur uazila, seven unions in Dewanganj upazila, three unions in Madarganj upazila and six unions in Sarishabari upazila were affected by the flood. Dry food and other essential materials worth Taka five lakh and 24 metric tons of rice were distributed among the flood victims. DC of Jamalpur Md Shahabuddin Khan said Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs) and Union Parishad Chairmen in the flood affected areas are monitoring the flood situation and continuing relief operation.In Sirajganj, the water of Jamuna river slightly reduced. The water of the rivers Kortoya, Hura Sagor, Gumani and Boral was also reduced. But the flood affected people are still facing troubles. Vast areas of 60 unions in seven upazilas of the district were affected by the flood.Water Resources Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud visited the flood-hit people at Mollabari area in the district town. During his visit, he assured that they are committed to protect the people of Sirajganj from the flood and erosion. The government is already repairing four embankments on the west bank of the Jamuna river, spending Tk. 250 crore, he said. In Bogra, the water of Jamuna was flowing over 61 cm above the danger mark. A number of people of Kamalapur, Candanbaisa, Kutubpur and Kurnibari have been marooned. Many families took are passing their days on the embankments. The people are also being affected by different water borne diseases due to lack of sanitation.In Lalmonirhat, the flood situation has improved slightly, as the Teesta water level has decreased at different points in the river. The water of the river Dharla and eight other small rivers was also decreased. In Kurigram, although there was some improvement in the flood situation, the flood-hit people are now being affected by different waterborne diseases. They are also crying for relief materials and government assistance. In the absence of adequate relief, they are facing acute crisis of food and drinking water. At least 2 lakh people are still marooned in the district. Vast areas of 53 unions of nine upazilas of the district went under flood water.
