Rural vulnerable women getting solvent by making ‘tupi’

 Several thousands of rural vulnerable women at different villages under Kawnia upazila in Rangpur district getting financially solvent by making ‘tupi’ (cap) in recent years.
These extreme poor women in the upazila are directly engaged in making stylish caps and thus they are contributing in their families income by earning about Tk 3000 to Tk 4000 per month.
MH Tupi Factory, established by Hafez Abdul Awal of Khefati village under Balapara union of Kawnia upazila has created job opportunities for these destitute rural women.
The factory has been getting export orders from traders of the Arab countries, especially Oman, and started exporting the item since 2006.
Sharmin Begum (30) poor woman at village Nijpara said she received training on sewing at MH Tupi Factory. Now she is a skilled worker. She does embroidery works and makes designs according to the order of the factory. Now she earns Tk 300 for each cap.
Owner of MH tupi Factory Abdul Awal said they give the workers cloth, yarn and other inputs. After completion of work the supervisors collect the products.
A worker can knit three caps in a week and gets Tk 300 for piece, Awal said. On the other hand, a superviser gets Tk 30 per piece to supervise the work. There are at least ten workers under a supervisor he also said.
With rising demand abroad the operations of the factory have spread in almost all the villages of the upazila, Awal further said.
He also laid emphasis on government’s patronisation to expand their business in more areas of the district, he added.
