Ruling party men, BNP, cop clashes leave 50 injured in Narsingdi and Tangail

At least 50 people were injured in separate clashes among police, ruling party Awami League (AL), Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists and supporters of BNP in Narsingdi and Tangail districts on Sunday.
In Narsingdi, a chase and counter- chase followed between BNP activists and cops at Hafizpur area in Monohordi upazila of the district on Sunday. Police fired around 100 rounds of bullets making at least 30 injured including 10 police members.
Among them 8 sustained bullet injuries. Two critically injured BNP supporters were sent to Dhaka. The rest of them were shifted to different hospitals in Kishorganj.
Former BNP lawmaker Sardar Sakhawat Hossain Bokul alleged that the activists of ruling party Awami League, BCL and police waylaid on a procession of BNP. As a result, 38 were injured including 27 BNP activists who sustained bullet injuries.
But police claimed that BNP activists made rowdy behaviour with them wielding sticks. At one stage, they hurled brick chips towards police. Later, police charged baton on them to bring the situation under control.
In Tangail: A clash triggered between BNP activists and BCL men, while BNP men going to their meeting place held at Charan Bazar in Kalihati upazila of Tangail district on Sunday. As a result, 15 BNP activists sustained injuries.
During the incident, 17 motorcycles, 6 pick up vans, 4 buses were vandalised. The eyewitness informed that a rally and protesting procession have been arranged organised by Upazila BNP in Charan Bazar.
Suddenly, BCL activists came in the meeting place wielding sticks being chanted the slogan while the rally was going on. At that time, they used to wallop BNP men.
However, joint convener of Tangail district BNP Forhad Iqbal claimed that BCL activists swooped on BNP supporters while staging the rally peacefully.
In Khulna: Attackers swooped on houses of several BNP leaders, vandalised and torched the party’s Khulna offices during clashes over holding rallies in the city’s Khalispur, the opposition party said on Sunday.
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) blamed for violence the activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League and Jubo League, the associate bodies of ruling Awami League, reports UNB.
Khulna Metropolitan BNP convener Advocate SM Shafiqul Alam Mana alleged in a press briefing on Saturday night that Khalishpur BNP office was vandalized and various ward offices were torched.
The attackers also vandalized the BNP leaders’ houses.
Nearly 50 activists of BNP were injured during the attack following the clashes, he added.
Jahangir Alam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Khalishpur police station, said the police put a restriction on holding rallies of AL and BNP at the same place in Baikali junction on Saturday afternoon.
However, BNP leaders and activists took out a procession in Khalishpur following the ban, said the OC.
As the BNP procession progressed, a clash broke out with AL leaders and workers, leaving several people injured, he added.
“Additional police were deployed in the area to bring the situation under control.”
