Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Haque has said that neither the political power nor bureaucracy wants a change in the police department in the context of Bangladesh.
Rather the ruling parties want the police to do whatever is said.
He was speaking at the launch of a book titled “- “Police Jiboner Smriti: Sworachar Patan Theke Jangi Daman” at the Poet Sufia Kamal Auditorium of the National Museum in the capital’s Shahbagh on Saturday. He said those in power think the police are their own property. The MP wants the OC (officer-in-charge of the police station) to do whatever he says. It is very difficult to deal with these challenges and adversities. “I did not bow to any political evil,” he said, adding, “I did not work aiming at holding any certain chair. Whenever I got transferred, I left the previous office to join the new one.” While in office, I did not hesitate to take action against the Awami League leaders and activists in Moulvibazar. But none liked me to do it. For this, a system should be introduced so that the police can work impartially, he added.
