Rukaya, one of the conjoined twins separated after mega surgery in Dhaka’s Combined Military Hospital, is still unconscious.
Rabeya opened her eyes before two days on Friday, Rafiqul Islam, father of the twins told journalists on Saturday.
The 33-hour-long operation to separate the sisters started on July 31, where 100 doctors from Bangladesh and 32 from Hungary took part.
” This operation is a milestone in the subcontinent,” said Dr Samanta Lal Sen, the National Coordinator of the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Regarding Rukaya’s unconsciouness, Dr Samanta also said “A bit more time is still required.”
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina herself took the responsibility of organising the operation, Dr Samanta added.
Inter Service Public Relations (ISPR) also held a press briefing on 10th August to announce the success of the mega operation.
Bangladeshi twins whose heads were joined were recovering from Friday after Hungarian surgeons performed a marathon 30-hour long operation to separate their skulls and brains.
The three-year old twins named Rabeya and Rukaya suffered from a rare embryological disorder affecting an estimated one in every five to six million births.
They were “stable after the final separation,” said Andras Csokay, a neurosurgeon with the Action for Defenceless People Foundation (ADPF) that organised the 35-strong Hungarian surgical team.
After the separation at Dhaka’s Combined Military Hospital, Csokay’s team began to cover the wound area with soft tissues generated by a tissue expansion process carried out in Hungary.
