Rubana Huq, Managing Director of Mohammadi Group, took charge as the President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) on Saturday.
She will lead the trade body for the next two years.
Outgoing BGMEA President Md Siddiqur Rahman handed over the charge to Rubana after the 36th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the trade body held at its new office in Uttara on Saturday.
Rubana Huq is the first woman to hold the top position in BGMEA’s history.
She is the wife of late Dhaka North City Corporation mayor and former BGMEA president Annisul Huq.
Besides, the new office bearers of BGMEA also took over the offices after the AGM.
The office bearers are: Md Abdus Salam (first vice-president), Faisal Samad (senior vice-president), SM Mannan Kochi, MA Rahim Firoz, Arshad Jamal Dipu, Md Mashiul Alam (Sajal) and AM Chowdhury (Selim).
The AGM endorsed the audited financial report of the BGMEA for the financial year 2017-18 and approved the budget of the trade body for the current fiscal year (2018-19).
On April 6, Rubana Huq guided the Sammilita Parisad-Forum panel to win the biennial election to the BGMEA in all 35 directors posts.
The last BGMEA election was held in 2013. The election is usually scheduled for every two years. However, it was not held in 2015 since both rival panels Sammilito Parisad and Forum jointly decided to elect the board in consensus.
The outgoing board under the leadership of its president, Md Siddiqur Rahman assumed office on September 22, 2015 through a negotiation process for a two-year term.
But Siddique served as BGMEA president for three years and seven months as his tenure got extended thrice following directives by the ministry of commerce.
