Residential students of Rajshahi University (RU) are facing problems as reading room facilities are not satisfactory in the dormitory of the university.
There have 18 residential halls-11 for male students, six for female students, and one for international students.
Although 12 halls have reading room facilities, they face a shortage of seats.
Besides, Shah Mukhdum Hall (422 boarders), Nawab Abdul Latif Hall (325 boarders), Motihar Hall (540 boarders), Saheed Shamsuzzuha Hall (420 boarders), and Rokeya Hall (720 boarders) have no special reading room for the students. As a result, they have to come in the university’s reading room for study purposes.
Witness sources, in the reading room of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall have eight seats for 496 resident students, Sher-e- Bangla Hall have 25 seats for 308 students, Amir Ali Hall have 20 seats for 410 students, Shaheed Habibur Rahman Hall have 12 seats for 802 students, Mader Bux Hall have 17 seats for 540 students, Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall have 15 seats for 490 students, Monnojan Hall have 25 seats for 860 students and Taposi Rabeya Hall have 25 seats for 460 students, Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Hall have only 35 seats for 300 students.
Begum Khaleda Zia Hall have 18 seats for 452 students. It has one common room for over 100 students while Rahmatunnesa Hall have two reading rooms, but one remains permanently shut and the other has a seating capacity of 600.
Nurunnehar, a second year student of Begum Rokeya Hall said “We don’t have well furnished reading rooms in the dormitory that is why we are being deprived of proper facilities.” However, she beg the attention of the authorities regarding the matter.
Nazmul Mridha, a third year student of Madar Bux hall said “There is a reading room in our dormitory but it remains vacant all time. We are not getting expected facilities from the reading room.”
Professor Subhash Chandra Sil, administrator of the RU central library said “around 18 Air Conditioners are defective in the library, we inform the vice chancellor about the matter while he gave assurance to re-construct the AC. Besides, seats in the reading room are enough to meet the demand of the students.
Convener of hall provost Council Professor Dr Rubaiyat Yasmin said, this is a long term problem, but we are trying to solve the problem with the assistance of RU authorities.
