The Rajshahi University (RU) authorities on Monday observed the ‘Teachers and Students Repression Day’ marking the countrywide atrocities teachers and students from August 20 to 23 in 2007 during the military-backed caretaker government rule.
On August 20, 2007, army personnel beat up three Dhaka University (DU) students and insulted a teacher during a football match, which led clashes between police and students all over the country’s educational institutions from DU.
During the clashes in RU, a rickshaw-puller was killed and around 200 people were injured, vehicles were vandalized, properties of the university including the vice-chancellor’s residence were damaged.
Marking the day, RU authorities organized a discussion programme at senate building of the university at 11:00am while RU VC Prof Muhammad Mizanuddin presided over the programme.
Among others, Pro-VC Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan, repressed teachers on that day Prof Saidur Rahman Khan, former RU VC, Golam Sabbir Sattar, Dulal Chandra Biswas and Malay Kumar Bhowmik were addressed.
Condemning the incident speakers at the programme demanded exemplary punishment of the real culprits of the incidents.
They also demanded immediate withdrawal of the cases filed against 13 students of RU following the incident though the case against teachers has already withdrawn.
Meanwhile, expressing anger, many teachers and students of the university said that the day isn’t observing with the proper way as it has a national importance.
