The academic committee of Rajshahi University Law Department on Tuesday submitted a complaint to the university sexual harassment and abuse prevention committee against a student of the department allegedly for harassing some female students of the department sexually.
The department lodged the complaint with the committee against Chowdhury Shishir, a second year student of the department, following a meeting of the department’s academic committee held on Tuesday morning presided over by department chair Professor Mohammad Abdul Hannan.
Professor Hannan told New Nation that they came up with the decision following the allegations submitted by several students of the department against Shishir in different times.
“As the matter is related to the sexual harassment, we have requested the sexual harassment and abuse prevention committee to investigate into the allegations and to take necessary steps soon”, he said.
Earlier on March 20, some students lodged complaint with Malopara Police Station of the city against Shishir, bringing allegations of harassing them sexually through social media. Following their allegations, police detained Shishir and later released on the following day.
On Sunday, the victim students submitted separate complaint to the university vice chancellor Professor M Abdus Sobhan, pro-vice chancellor Professor Ananda Kumar Saha, student’s adviser Professor Zannatul Ferdous, law faculty dean Professor Abu Naser Md Wahid and department chair Professor Mohammad Abdul Hannan, seeking immediate punitive measurements against Shishir.
However, Shishir could not reach for his comment as his phone number was found switched off.
