Rooftop gardening has become popular in Sylhet. The cultivation of flowers, fruits including vegetables is now being cultivated regularly in the roof of the houses. Cultivation of various types of vegetables and fruit-flowers are planted throughout all year.
The rooftop houses of Sylhet city, greater Uposhohor area and BADC are covered with a different flowers, fruit plants, vegetables etc. Thousands of families in the Sylhet city meet their demand for safe food and nutritious food in the roof. The Department of Agricultural Extension is looking very positive in this regard. They think that the garden at home is not just a hobby, it also has its major role in protecting the environment.
The reaction from the rooftop garden, the greenhouse survive, environmental pollution, and biodiversity can be preserved. Besides, fresh vegetables and fruits are also needed.
For these reasons, the rooftop garden has got quite popular among people. Of course, most of the gardens are seen on the roof is unplanned. When it is planned gardening, it will also play a vital role in protecting the environment by meeting the daily demand for vegetables.In a little effort and plan the concrete roof of the house can turn into a green field. Children are also involved in roof gardening. Importer and Exporter Haji Md. Abdus Salam has developed rooftop garden on her roof of the 5-storey building. His colleagues came every day to see the beauty of her rooftop garden.
Haji Md. Abdus Salam said, “I started roof gardening after getting inspiration from district fair and tree plantation fair. After collecting the plants from the tree fair, I started the roof farm by planting them in the roof.”
Planting of trees increased day by day. At present, there are 200 types of trees in the garden. Mango, grape, lemon, banana, grapefruit, Malta, plum, Chinese orange and various types of vegetable. he further said, “I do not use any kind of chemical fertilizers and insecticides on the plants. I only use fertilizers made with tea leaves, curries, and fish discarded on the trees. I sell these fruits and vegetables from the garden in the local market. of the garden.”
Shamim Iqbal Upashohor area of the city said that the number of trees is decreasing in the city every now and then. As a result, the environment is being threatened day by day. So, keeping the environment beautiful and loving, people are building gardens on the roof of the house.
Deputy Director of the Sylhet District Agriculture Extension Department, said, “Healthy food produced from the roof gardens can be very safe for the body as well, in the same way, it can play an important role in keeping the environment free and pollution free of accommodation.”
“The Agriculture Department has been advised to raise the response to the common people for setting up the rooftop garden,” he added.
