A new award titled ‘Ronoda Prasad Roy Award of Academic Excellence’ has been introduced at the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Applied Mathematics of Dhaka University (DU). Vice-Chancellor (in-charge) and Treasurer of North South University Dr Gour Gobinda Goswami handed over a cheque for Tk. 24 lakh and 44 thousand to DU Treasurer Prof Dr Md. Kamal Uddin on Wednesday at the Vice-Chancellor’s office to introduce the award. A donor who desired not to be identified has donated money to introduce this award in memory of late Ronoda Prasad Roy.
Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Science Dr M Arshad Momen, Chairman of the Department of Mathematics Prof Dr Amulya Chandro Mandal, Chairman of the Department of Applied Mathematics Prof Dr Md. Abdus Samad, Provost of the Jagannath Hall Dr Asim Sarkar and other faculty members were present on the occasion.
Out of the income of this donation, every year two meritorious students from the Hindu community who will secure the highest CGPA in BS final examinations from the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Applied Mathematics respectively of DU will be awarded ‘Ronoda Prasad Roy Award of Academic Excellence.’
Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Arefin Siddique thanked the donor for introducing this award at Dhaka University and hoped that the students would be highly benefited and encouraged from this donation.
He urged the rich people of the society to come forward with their helping hands for the brilliant students by following the example of the donor.
It may be mentioned that Ronoda Prasad Roy was a third year honors student of the Department of Mathematics of Dhaka University. He was brutally killed by the barbaric Pakistani Army on the Black Night of March 25 in1971.
