Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crimes (CTTC) unit Chief Monirul Islam said they have identified three people as the financiers of the recent Holey Artisan Bakery attack.
They were identified as Dr Rokon Uddin, Tanveer Quaderi and former Major Zahid.
The CTTC Chief disclosed the information in a press conference at Detective Branch (DB) Office in the city’s Minto Road on Tuesday afternoon.
Monirul Islam said, “Of the three, Dr Rokon left Bangladesh for Syria to join the jihadist group Islamic State (IS) while the other two died in a shootout during a police drive in their dens.”
“Former registrar of Bangladesh Shishu Hospital Dr Rokon gave Tk 80 lakh to the New JMB, a new faction of banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to run the attack while Tanveer donated money out of fund came from the sale of his Uttara flat and Major Zahid gave away his full pension money,” the CTTC chief said.
Tanveer died in the Azimpur gunfight during a police drive and Major Zahid was gunned down in Rupnagar drive, he said.
“Some funds also came from abroad. We are trying to identify them,” Monirul said.
Police believe that the new JMB, which has pledged allegiance to Islamic State, was involved in organising the cafe attack, the CTTC boss claimed.
According to sources, Dr Rokon Uddin, inhabitant of city’s Malibagh Chowdhurpara and also former physician of Dhaka Shishu Hospital, had gone missing with his four family members on July 18. Now it is believed to have gone to Syria.
The other family members are Rokon Uddin’s wife Naima Akter, elder daughter Nadia and her husband Shishir and Rokon’s younger daughter Ramita.
Of them, Naima was professor of Government Kabi Nazrul College while Nadia and Shishir were students of the Department of the English of North South University. Ramita is a student of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College.
