Department of Women and Gender Studies of Dhaka University (DU) organized “Rokeya Memorial Lecture” on Wednesday at Muzaffar Ahmed Chowdhury Auditorium of the university. Vice-Chancellor of DU Prof Dr Md. Akhtaruzzaman addressed the program as chief guest.
Chairperson of the Department of Women and Gender Studies Dr Sanjida Akhter presided over the function while Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences Prof Dr Sadeka Halim addressed it as special guest.
Vice- Chancellor of Asian University for Women Prof Dr Nirmala Rao and Prof Dr Ayesha Banu of DU Women and Gender Studies Department delivered memorial lectures on “Education and Empowerment: Promoting Gender Equality in South Asia” and “Equal Rights in Family and the Bangladesh Women’s Movement: Personal Law and Uniform Family Code” respectively.
DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md. Akhtaruzzaman paid glowing tribute to the memory of Begum Rokeya. He also recalled the outstanding contributions of Begum Rokeya to promote women education as well as establish women empowerment in South Asia.
He urged the young generation to play an effective role in eradicating all sorts of gender discriminations from the society by following the ideals of Begum Rokeya.
