The 137th birth anniversary and 85th death anniversary of the precursor to the rise of Bengali women Begum Rokeya was observed in a befitting manner at Begum Rokeya University(BRU), Rangpur.
On this day of 1880, Begum Rokeys was born in the village of Pyarband in Rangpur district. Even after being born in a conservative Muslim family, she came under the roles of women’s awakening. Begum Rokeya is a reputed Bengali writer and social reformer of the nineteenth century. He died on 9 December 1932 in Kolkata.
Rangpur district administration, Begum Rokeya University(BRU), Rangpur and several socio-cultural and women’s organizations have chalked up programmes to observe the Rokeya Day 2017.
The Rangpur district administration has organised a three-day programme to observe the day at her birthplace in Pairaband village, Rangpur. The day will begin with the placing of wreaths at Begum Rokeya Smriti Stambha (memorial) at 9 am. Besides the Milad Mahfil with voluntary blood donation program, documentary film exhibition, children’s painting competition, poetry recitation, composition and debate competition, traditional Rokeya fair, Begum Rokeya free discussion and colorful cultural program will be held at the three days programs.
Kazi Hasan Ahmed, Rangpur Divisional Commissioner will be the chief guest in the chairmanship of Mohammad Wahiduzzaman, Rangpur Deputy Commissioner in the 1st day discussion meeting. Khandaker Golam Faruk BPM, PPM, DIG of Rangpur, Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed, Rangpur district Awami League acting president, Rashik Rahman, Awami League leader and eminent social worker, Mozammel Haque Mintu Mia president of Upazila Awami League will be the special guest of the meeting.
On the 2nd day`s discussion meeting Prof Dr Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah, Vice Chancellor of Begum Rokeya University was the chief guest in the chairmanship of Rashidul Mannaf Kabir, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Rangpur. Mizanur Rahman, Rangpur Superintendent of Police, Ruhul Amin Mia, local government’s Deputy Director (Acting) will be the special guests.
On the 3rd day`s meeting HN Ashikur Rahman MP, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Administration Ministry will be the chief guest in the chairmanship of deputy commissioner Mohammad Wahiduzzaman.
Meanwhile the Begum Rokeya university has organized to celebrate the day. The rally will be held at 9:00am, placing wreaths on her portraits at 10 am and a discussion meeting will be held at 10.30 am presided over by the university’s prof Dr. Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah, BTFO.
However, Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain fought for the equal rights of women in the state, society and family system, through which she earned fame as the renowned Bengali literature of the nineteenth century. Through the writings of Kutch, in the annals of Matichur, Sultan’s dream, Padmarg, blockade, etc., she unveiled religious fanaticism, superstition and women’s captivity. In addition to this, she always tried hard against child marriage, dowry and unfair practices against women.
