Rokeya Day observed

The nation observed the ‘Begum Rokeya Day’ on Tuesday marking the birth and death anniversary of the pioneer of women’s rights movement in the subcontinent, Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain.
The Women and Children Affairs Ministry and various socio-cultural and political organisations marked the day with elaborate programmes.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina handed over the Begum Rokeya medals to two erudite women-Prof Mamtaj Begum and Golap Banu-for their outstanding contributions towards spreading female education, ensuring human rights and immense work
for the socio-economic development at a function at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka.
Dhaka University (DU) brought out a rally on the campus commemorating the 134th birth and 82nd death anniversary of Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain.
Led by DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique, the rally began from the foot of Aparajeya Bangla in the morning and ended in front of the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) after parading major points on the campus.
DU Women and Gender Studies Department organised a Rokeya Lecture Series at Nawab Nabab Ali Choudhury Senate Bhaban on the occasion.
Chaired by department chairman Tania Haque, lecture series was addressed, among others, by the DU vice-chancellor and The Daily Star editor Mahfuz Anam.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Arefin called upon the students of new generation to take lessons from Begum Rokeya’s life.
Terming Begum Rokeya pathfinder and pioneer of women’s education in the country, he stressed for eradication and elimination of male-female disparity and inequality from the society.
