Police have arrested five members of a professional robbery gang from South Keraniganj area in the capital on Tuesday.
The arrestees are – ring leader Shaon Ahmed Joy, Zahidul Islam, Yamin, Hridoy and Babul.
Two pickup trucks, a chopper, three knives, looted money and eleven mobile phones used in the robbery were recovered from their posession.
They were committing robbery and mugging
roaming the city with snatching pickup van or truck.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Additional Commissioner (Detective Branch) AKM Hafiz Akhtar told in a press briefing in DMP media centre on Wednesday that there are multiple cases of robbery and snatching against each member of the gang.
He said some are masons, some are hotel boys and some work as labour in wedding or party decoration. But at night they become dangerous. They had been mugging and robbing in selected spots or isolated areas of flyovers intercepting pedestrians, motorbikes and freight vehicles at gunpoint”.
The ringleader Shaon was arrested several times earlier but he did not stop his robbery and mugging mission. Even after going to jail, the group rearranged, he added.
They were active at capital’s Mahakhali, Shah Ali, Mirpur’s Gudara Ghat, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Savar, Ashulia, Keraniganj and Bhulta areas, according to police.
The official also said that 7 to 8 robbers intercepted two persons near Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) area with a snatched pickup truck and looted cash and goods including mobile phones at gunpoint on January 28.
A case was filed with Chawkbazar Model Police Station over the incident. DB’s Lalbagh division started shadow investigation in the case and later arrested five of this gang, he said.
Hafiz also said that the robber gang was involved in snatching a pickup with 22,000 eggs. Attempts to arrest other members of the ring continue. He requested to people report such incidents in police station.
