Robbery, mugging unabated in Sylhet

Incidents of mugging and robbery have marked a sharp rise in and around Sylhet city as a number of listed criminals have recently got bail. On October total 15 On November total 20 robbery and mugging incidents happened in Sylhet area.
Shahin Ahmed, a resident of Dakshin Surma upazila, said a panic situation had been prevailing in the city.
Sylhet metropolitan Police Commissioner Kamrul Hasan said recently about 20 listed criminals got bail from the court and they had been involved in mugging and robbery again. ‘We are trying to nab the culprits. We have already arrested a dozen of muggers so far,’ He said.
Nizam Ahmed, a resident of Lalabazar area, said criminals were taking advantage of lax monitoring by law enforcement agencies. He also urged the authorities concerned to take the matter seriously.
Call to create awareness against AIDS: World AIDS Day was observed in Sylhet Tuesday with a call to create adequate awareness among common people, especially young generations and vulnerable groups, for preventing spread of the deadly diseases.
Speakers at a discussion said by exercising the religious and moral values and maintaining preventive measure in over day-to-day life we can protect ourselves from the deadly diseases. They said a comprehensive strategic policy should be formulated in this regard targeting the susceptible groups, mainly youths. They stressed women empowerment to facilitate the prevention of the diseases.
The discussants said that conscious and most elite citizens like elected public representatives, teachers, imams, due to their higher respectable position in the society, can play the most effective role in raising mass awareness up to grass root level to keep AIDS away by improving local people’s knowledge about HIV/AIDS, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and worst impacts of those disease among the people including the youths and adolescent.
To mark the day Sylhet District Administration, Department of Health, Sylhet Division, Civil Surgeon Office, Sylhet and HIV/AIDS affairs government and non-government organisations arranged a colourful procession and discussion meeting in Sylhet city.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Sylhet Md Shohidul Islam was addressed the function as chief guest. Civil Surgeon of Sylhet Additional Deputy Commissioner (education and ICT) of Sylhet were present as special guests.
