Incidents of mugging and robbery have marked a sharp rise in and around Sylhet city as a number of listed criminals have recently got bail. 31 july A gang of armed robbers entered the Oikotan 221-4 and Oikotan 221-5 of one Fojlul Hoque and Mojibur Rahman under PirMoholla area in Sylhet around 4:00am breaking the door and looted 20 grams of gold ornaments, cash, mobile phone sets and valuables worth Tk 25 lakh. Airport Police Station OC Gousul Hossain confirmed the news.
27 july a gang of masked criminals broke into the house of Motosir Ali, at Mohona C-19 Patantula area and looted all the valuable things in the house.
The miscreants robbed 10 tolas of gold ornaments, cash Tk 40 Thousand and other stuffs worth total Tk 10 lakh from the house.
Another gang of muggers raided another Abdur Rohim’s house at Mohona C-29/3 Patantula area and took away cash, gold ornaments and other stuffs worth Tk 5 lakh.
On information, Jalalabad police visited both the spots. On 22 july a gang of robbers cutting grill of a window entered the flat of a house in Senpara area and robbed 22 tolas of gold bars and Tk1 lakh in cash. On 6 july a gang of robbers cutting grill of a window entered the flat of a house in Rajar goli area and robbed 22 tolas of gold bars and Tk80 Thousand in cash.
On 16 june a gang of robbers cutting grill of a window entered the flat of a house in Ponitola area and robbed 26 tolas of gold bars and Tk15 lakh in cash.
On 16 May a gang of robbers cutting grill of a window entered the a house in Tatly area and robbed 40 tolas of gold bars and Tk5 lakh in cash. Nizam Ahmed, a resident of Dakshin Surma area, said criminals were taking advantage of lax monitoring by law enforcement agencies. He also urged the authorities concerned to take the matter seriously.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police Commissioner Kamrul ahsan said drives were on to arrest criminals.
Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Sylhet side turns into a deathtrap: The Dhaka-Sylhet highway on Sylhet ‘s side has recently turned into a death trap for those who travel on the road, especially vehicles carrying goods.
Many vehicles reportedly fall into clearings and holes on this road everyday.
The Shadipur, Sherpur, Burunga, Tajpur, Kashikapon, Doyamir, Kuruya, Rashidpur, LaLabazar, Otirbary and Tatly areas of the road are especially affected.
An executive engineer of RHD, said the road has become tender due to reconstruction.
“Hopefully it’ll improve in the next two-three days,” he said.
However, this has reportedly been an issue for two years. In avoiding this part of the roads, many end up traveling with their vehicles on the village roads.
Passengers and transport service providers said on Tuesday, three goods-laden trucks tumbled into an opening on the 10km road in LaLabazar and Tatly area, while the axles of 11 goods-laden truck were broken.
