Robber shot at in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfight’

An alleged ringleader was shot and wounded in a ‘gunfight’ with members of Detective Branch (DB) of police in Bypass Road area in the district town early Monday.
The injured was identified as Shafiqur Rahman alias Shafique, 35, son of Abul Hossain of Larpara in the district town and leader of a robber gang.
Cox’s Bazar DB officer-in-charge Manjurul Alam said tipped off, a team of DB police launched a drive in the area while a gang of robbers was preparing to commit robbery at about 3:00 am.
Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the robbers opened fire on them, prompting the law enforcers to fire back, triggering a gunfight that left Shafique injured with bullet.
Later, police arrested bullet-hit Shafiq and admitted him to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
Assistant sub-inspector Titu Dutta and constable Mehedi Hasan were also injured during the gunfight.
Police recovered a light gun (LG) and three cartridges from the scene. A case was filed in this connection.
