A suspected ringleader of a robber gang was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) at Italy Market in Sonagazi upazila on Friday night.
The deceased was identified as Mohammad Kalam alias Bhagina Kalam, the ringleader of robber gang ‘Bhagina Kalam Bahini’ and son of Abul Hasem, a resident of Chardarbesh of the upazila.
Receiving informed that members of ‘Bhagina Kalam Bahini’ gathered in Italy Market area, the elite force took position there around 7:45pm, said squadron leader Shafayat Jamil Harun, commanding officer of Rab-7.
Sensing the presence of the Rab men, the gang opened fire, forcing the law enforcers to retaliate, he said.
After 20 minutes of gunfight, members of the gang retreated. Later, Rab members detained bullet-hit Kalam from the spot. Kalam was rushed to Feni Sadar Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
The elite force also recovered four firearms, four sharp weapons, 12 rounds of bullets and seven bullet shells from the spot. Kalam was wanted in 24 cases including for robbery, rapping and murder, the CO added.
