An alleged robber was killed during a “gunfight” with police in Kulaura upazila of Moulvibazar on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Islam Uddin alias Islam Ali, 45, son of Motsin Ali from Kamalganj upazila.
The deceased was accused in more than 10 robbery cases filed with different police stations, Shamim Musa, Officer-in-Charge of Kulaura Police Station, told our correspondent.
A team of police raided the Paboi area of the upazila around 4:00 am based on information that a gang of robbers was taking preparation to commit a robbery there, Sub-Inspector Jahurul Islam Talukder from Kulaura Police Station said.
But the robbers opened fire on them, prompting “gun battle”, the police official said.
Islam Ali, the leader of the gang, was hit by a bullet during the “gunfight” and died on the spot, he said. All the other robbers, however, managed to flee the spot.
Police also recovered a local pistol, five rounds of bullets and five machetes from the spot.
A police team, led by Additional Superintendent Abu Yusuf was going to Hazipur’s Paboi village after being tipped off about the presence of armed robbers there.
After the skirmish, police recovered the body of Islam Ali.
Kulaura Police’s Sub-Inspector Yasin Ali and three constables, injured in the skirmish, are being treated at the Upazila Health Complex, he added.
