Some 20 kilometers brick-made and kuncha roads at Hoglabunia Union under Morrelganj Upazila in Bagerhat district were washed away by the tidal surge in the river Panguchi during the last flood tide during the time of first new moon. As a result, the sufferings of the people of those four villages of the Union knew no bounds. The suffering people of the villages already strongly raised their vices for the construction of a 9-kilometer long durable embankment on the bank of the river Panguchi that passes away by the sides of those villages.
Shankibhanga, Badnibhanga and Pathamara villages are situated just on the bank of the river Panguchi. There are two wide brick made roads and some eight kilometers long and short kuncha roads in those villages for the movement of the villagers. But the 12 kilometers long brick made road running from Shankibhanga to Chowkidarhat via C&B was broken at many point by the recent 5-day long tidal surge of the river Panguchi at the time of flood tide (on the occasion of the first moon) . On the other hand 4 kilometer long kuncha road running from the house of one Sekendar Shaikh to Darul Koran Senior Siddiqia Madrasa was almost completely washed away by the tidal surge merged with the river.
On the other hand, a 5-kilometer long brick made road running from Badnibhanga kiln to Patherhat was broken at many points. As a result, almost all the roads of the Union became unfit for the movement of 10 thousand inhabitants of the above mentioned four villages. At present there are as many as 2 Dakhil Madrasas, 1 Alim Madrasa, 1 Ibtedayee Madrasa, 2 Hafijia Madrasas, 1 High School and 4 Primary Schools in those villages. Besides these, there are some 14 Jame mosques.
Md. Aramuzzaman, UP Chairman of Hoglabunia Union Parishad told, both kuncha and semi pucca roads of the area were either washed away by the heavy onrush of the river water or collapsed in the rivers. The matter was brought to the notice of the concerned higher authorities. Last year a team of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) headed by its Chairman visited the areas closed to the river Panguchi. But no step was taken so far by the Board to construct an embankment on the bank of the river to protect the area from the tidal surge of the river. He demanded for the construction of a 9-kilometer long durable and permanent embankment from Solombaria sluice gate point to the river Mara Baleswar, the ending point of the Union.
Md. Delwar Hossain, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Morrelganj disclosed to the newsmen, after investigating into the matter (broken and washed away roads of the area) steps will be taken on an emergency basis.
