Road tragedies continue to roll the country as another 13 people, including five women, were killed and over 100 others injured in separate accidents in Rangpur, Bogura, Dhaka and Narayanganj districts on Sunday.
The injured were rushed to local hospitals and different other clinics, report our local correspondents quoting police and witnesses.
In Rangpur, seven persons were killed and 63 others injured when a Panchagarh bound BRTC bus from Bogra and a Rangpur bound passenger bus from Thakurgaon collided head-on in CO Bazar area of Rangpur municipality around 12:00 noon, our district correspondent reports quoting witnesses.
The injured passengers, including women and children, were taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH) and condition of some of them are critical, said Additional Superintendent of Rangpur Police Saifur Rahman.
Four passengers, including three women, were killed on the spot while three others critically injured succumbed to their injuries at the RMCH.
Six of the deceased were identified as Roksana Begum, 20, wife of Rubel Hossain of Sundarganj upazila
in Gaibandha, Omizan Nesa, 45, wife of Anwar Hossain of Syedpur upazila, Noor Banu, 45, wife of late Shahidul Islam of Kishoreganj upazila in Nilphamari and Abdur Rahman, 60, of Thakurgaon,
Shahin, 10, was from Panchagarh while Sumi Akhter, 24, wife of Police Constable Mamun working at Tentulia Thana in Panchagarh. Identity of another woman, who succumbed at the RMCH, could not be known.
“The bodies would be handed over to their relatives after necessary formalities,” said Director of RMCH Dr Ajay Kumar Roy.
“The number of death might increase as conditions of three more injured persons undergoing treatment at RMCH, are very critical,” said Dr Ajay.
Acting Deputy Commissioner Ruhul Amin Mian said the district administration would provide Tk 20,000 to each family of deceased persons and financial assistance to ensure treatments of the injured persons.
The district administration has formed a three-member probe committee headed by Additional District Magistrate Monnaf Kabir with a senior police official and a BRTA official as members to investigate the incident.
“The probe committee will submit its report within the seven working days,” said the DC.
In Bogura, four persons died and 40 others injured in separate road accidents in the district in the wee hours of Sunday.
A passenger bus of Ena Paribahan collided head-on with a truck, leaving two people dead on the spot in Mohipur area of Sherpur upazila.
At the same time, a Dhaka-bound bus of SR Paribahan collided head-on with another bus, leaving two persons dead and 40 others injured. The injured people were sent to Bogra Shaheed Zia Medical College Hospital.
In Dhaka, a police officer was killed by an inter-city bus in the city’s Shah Ali area in the afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Uttam Kumar Sarkar, a Sub-Inspector of Rupnagar Police Station, said Officer-in-Charge of Shah Ali Police Station Anwar Hossain.
A bus of Eagle Paribahan hit Uttam in the area around 4:30pm, leaving the police official dead on the spot, said the OC. The driver of the bus has been detained and the bus seized.
In Narayanganj, a woman was killed as a bus ran over her in Shiddhirganj upazila.
The deceased was identified as Minu Akter, 55, wife of Abdus Samad of North Kamargaon area in Munshiganj.
