‘Road mishaps cause economic loss of Tk 500 cr annually’

Discussants at a view exchange meeting recommended a number of suggestions to reduce road accidents for saving lives in the country recently.
The recommendations came at a day long view exchange meeting on ‘ identify the local road safety problems and its solution’ at the conference room of Narsingdi Deputy Commissioner .
With the chair of Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Suriaya Begum , Deputy Commissioner Narsingdi Obaidul Azam addressed the meeting as Chief Guest.
Police Super Sheikh Rafiqul Islam, Civil Surgeon Dr. Potul Roy, Additional District Magistrate Zinnath Rahana addressed the meeting as special guests.
Probal Shaha , district representative of BRAC delivered the welcome speech while Suborna Daud Toha , Manager .BRAC Advocacy for Social Change presented the objective of road safety programme and promoting safe road code project of BRAC advocacy for social changes.
Among others , Assistant Director of BRTA SM Mahabur Rahaman, RMO, Narsingdi Zilla Hospital Mijanur Rahman, Principal of Narsingdi Polytechnic Institute Sushil Kumar Paul, President , Narsingdi District Bus Owner’s Association Jahanger Miah, President , District Truck Owner’s Associations Manik Mirdha, Project Coordinator, Road Safety, Centre for Injury Prevention and Research Bangladesh Eng Arif uddin, president of Narsingdi press club Habibur Rahman , General secretary Makhon Das. BSS correspondent Mohammad Abu Taher and secretary of district motor worker’s association Robiul Hossain spoke in the meeting.
The speakers highly appreciated the government for taking comprehensive steps to reduce road accidents by 50 percent within the next 15 years when the country experiences over 5000 road accidents annually losing over 4000 human lives and injure many more. They said due to road accident the economic loss of our country is at least five thousand core a year which stands 1.6 percent loss of our GDP.
To reduce the number of road accident and casualties substantially by ensuring road safety, they urged drivers, helpers and law enforcers to follow traffic rules strictly while discharging duties.
