Well known human rights activist Sultana Kamal says that road accidents have become a common phenomenon in the country due to the mismanagement of the government and the transport owners.
“Road crashes in our country kill more people than any epidemic,” Sultana Kamal came up with the statement while addressing a press conference at the National Press Club in Dhaka on Friday noon.
The road accidents are on the rise due to the absence of good governance and accountability of the concerned authorities, Sultana Kamal said holding the government, transport owners and workers responsible for this.
“If someone goes outside home, family members have to wait with uncertainty whether he or she will come back alive. Why do we have to pass through such uncertainty?” she raised the question.
She also called upon the authorities to stop operating buses on trip basis and plying of unfit vehicles on the streets through strictly implementing the traffic rules.
Speaking at the programme, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal lawmaker Mayeen Uddin Khan Badal also blamed the VIPs for violating the traffic rules and said the traffic laws are being violated by the people who formulate these.
