Chittagong bureau :
Roads in the port city Chittagong have turned worst during the ongoing monsoon this than in any time ever before as most of the roads have been damaged by incessant rainfall. According to sources, vehicles cannot run on the roads of Chittagong city as the condition of maximum roads has deteriorated seriously due to lack of renovation after the heavy rainfall in the current rainy season. Most of the roads and alleys in the port city have become unfit for traffic due to cracks and potholes, causing sufferings to the pedestrians, commuters as well as the drivers.
Sources said the authority which is responsible for renovating the roads in the city is Chittagong City Corporation (CCC). Now, the CCC is trying to fill up the cracks and potholes by the bitumen with small stones. The Superintendent Engineer of CCC Engineer Rafiqul Islam said, “We are renovating the roads by “Ash Fault Plant” and using the bitumen with small stones to fill up the cracks and potholes of roads.”
He said, “As it is raining almost every day, the CCC workers are using the bitumen with small stones to fill up the cracks and potholes of roads. But, after rain, the said bitumen is washed away again.” It is seen that the CCC workers are renovating the cracks and potholes by the bitumen with small stones at many areas in the city in last few days. Moreover, the city dwellers have been suffering a lot due to water logging during the rainy season.
City dwellers have said that the port city of Chittagong has now turned into a place of frequent water-logging in the rainy season following a heavy shower even in the moderate rainfall due to faulty drainage system. Almost all the low-lying areas of the city went under water if the city experiences torrential rainfall.
The rain water inundates the city streets by overflowing the drains because most of the drains were silted up heavily, causing disruption in normal discharge of rain water. As a result, vehicles are plying the roads with high risk. Big ditches, damaging of carpets and lack of renovation works and continuous downpour in last week made the roads of the port very rough and risky.
Sources said the owners of transports in the port city are to count additional money for repairing their vehicles due to dilapidated state of the roads. The owners alleged that there was no maintenance works of CCC or Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) in the current rainy season. As a result, the bricks and pitches of maximum roads in the city have damaged.
Niaj Ahamad, a bus driver of the port city, has said it has become tough for them to drive on the dilapidated road and they are to spend additional money for maintenance their vehicles. He said longevity of the vehicles is decreasing day by day due to bad condition of the roads.
Kamrul Hasan, a city dweller, has said that he has to pay extra fare to the rickshaw-puller due to the unfit roads. “Sometimes they refuse to go even after offering higher fare”, he added. Saima Akter, a student, said the small vehicles like cars or CNG baby taxies are quite unable to run on the dilapidated roads. She said the roads are repaired on some occasions but returned to their bad shape in few days, increasing further the troubles.
Shahanoor Begum, Ward Councilor of Patenga area said, “CCC is yet to take up renovation works of the roads. The condition of roads at Katgor, Steel Mills, Narikeltola, Cemenet Crossing is worst. Vehicles cannot run on the roads of the said areas. So, traffic congestion is making the lives of people miserable every day.”
The conditions of the roads at Agrabad, Barik Building, Chittagong Port area, Patenga, Steel Mills, Katgor Bazar, Airport, Muradpur, Oxygen Intersection, Sholoshohor, Dewanhat, Olanker Intersection, Port Connecting Road, Bohoddarhat, College Road, Jamal Khan, Momin Road, Station Road, Kadamtali, Dhonialapara, Chawk Bazar, Sholok Bahar, Katalganj, Bakalia, New Market, SS Khaled Road, Mehdibag, OR Nizam Road, Pahartali and Bayezid Bostami are beyond description.
The condition of the prime road to Kalurghat Industrial Area, where many industries including multinational industries like Unilever Bangladesh Limited are located, is very rough and vehicles are quite unable to run on the said dilapidated road.
