Direct road communications with two upazilas including Banaripara of Barishal and Nesarabad (Swarupkathi) of Pirojpur disrupted after stone laden over loaded truck fell into canal collapsing steel Bailey bridge on Tuesday morning.
The collapsed bridge was situated on Rajerber Canal under Madhabpasha Union of Babugonj upazila under Barishal district.
The 120 meter-long 10 feet wide steel Bailey bridge, was constructed over the canal in 2005 by the Roads and Highways Department (RHD), Barishal RHD sources said.
No causality was made due to that accident till this report.
Witnesses said steel plates of the bailey bridge was broken when stone laden Banaripara bound over loaded truck coming from Sather district was trying to cross the bridge reached it at around 6 :00 AM on Tuesday.
Md. Manik, member of Madhabpasha Union Parishad, said the stone laden truck fell in the canal after steel Bailey bridge collapsed.
Mahabubul Islam, former member of Madhabpasha Union Parishad, said we demanded several times to RHD for constructing a heavy duty concrete bridge replacing the lightweight steel Bailey bridge, but yet not received any activities of new bridge.
This old type steel bailey bridge capable only to take maximum load of 5 tons, but load of the stone laden truck was over twenty tons and as a result the bridge was collapsed with the over loaded truck, said Md. Masud Khan, executive engineer, RHD, Barishal.
The bridge would be repaired for resuming transportation within next seven days and a temporary diversion way could be created for crossing the people and light and manual road transports as soon as possible, he added.
RHD official also informed that work for constructing a new concrete bridge would be started at this point within two month as the tendering that already completed.
Nusrat Jahan, acting upazila nirbahi officer of Banaripara Upazila, said they have asked the high officials of RHD to repair the bridge quickly and prepare a diversion road before that.
Local people claimed road communication from Nesarabad Upazila of Pirojpur district and Banarpara Upazila of Barishal district to Barishal divisional city and other parts of the country fully disrupted due to that accident. Now people crossing the canal with risk by manual boat.
