UNB, Dhaka :The Election Commission has warned BNP-backed mayoral candidates Mirza Abbas and Tabith Awal saying that blocking roads by BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s motorcade during electioneering is tantamount to violation of the election code of conduct. Returning Officer of Dhaka South City Corporation election Mihir Sarwar Morshed on Wednesday sent a letter to Mirza Abbas in this regard.Earlier on Tuesday night, Returning Officer of Dhaka North City Corporation Md Shah Alam also sent a similar letter to Tabith Awal. In the letters, the returning officers requested the candidates to abide by the election code of conduct and not to block roads during the election campaign.”We’ve told the candidate (Abbas) that when BNP chief Khaleda Zia conducts election campaign in favour of you, her motorcade blocks roads and hampers the movement of people, which is tantamount to violation of the election code. We asked him to be sincere in this regard,” Mihir told reporters. The BNP chairperson has been carrying out election campaign in favour of her party-backed Tabith Awal and Mirza Abbas for the last few days. During the electioneering, her motorcade came under attacks at several places of the city. As Khaleda Zia is not holding any status of a minister after the January-5 parliamentary elections, there is no bar to her in engaging herself in election campaign as per the election code of conduct for the city corporations.
