Road accidents claim 8 lives in 5 districts

At least eight people were killed in road accidents in Khulna, Pabna, Jhenaidah, Tangail, and Madaripur on Friday, report our correspondents.
In Khulna, a motorcyclist was killed after being hit by a picnic bus near Baliakhali bridge on the Khulna-Satkhira Highway in Dumuria around 8:30am.
The deceased Zahid Khan, 24, was heading to his aunt’s house in Gutudia, confirmed Dumuria
Highway police SI Rezaul Karim. “The passengers on the picnic bus however remain unharmed.”
He also said police seized the bus but its driver and his assistance fled the scene.
Meanwhile, another bus was overturned in Dumuria injuring 25 people. Dumuria Highway Police SI Rezaul Karim said the bus overturned near Bottola area near Chuknagar at 11:30am in the morning.
In Pabna, two people were killed and three others were injured after a truck hit a CNG-run autorickshaw in Pabna-Sujanagar road at 9am.
The deceased were identified as Arifa Sultana, 45, and Jhantu Kundu, 60, both of Sujanagar municipality.
Ataikula police station OC Kamrul Islam said a CNG-run autorickshaw carrying passengers from Sujanagar collided with a truck coming from the opposite direction when the driver lost control due to dense fog in front of Ataikula Dublia Girls’ School.
In Jhenaidah, a woman died and another person was injured in a road accident at Ghoshpara on the Jhenaidah-Kushtia Highway.
The deceased Ripti Begum, 40, fell from the motorcycle that she was on with her cousin and a truck ran her over killing her on the spot, confirmed Jhenaidah Sadar police station OC Mizanur Rahman.
In Tangail, two people, including a child, were killed and another injured in a collision between a truck and a mini-truck on the Dhaka-Tangail highway around 2:30pm. The deceased could not be identified immediately, confirmed Elenga Highway police outpost police SI Ziaur Rahman.
In Madaripur, two people were killed and a number of others were seriously injured when an ambulance lost control and plunged into a ditch in Shibchar upazila around 12pm.
The deceased Khadija Begum, 50, and Mehedi Hasan, 18, died on the spot, confirmed Shibchar Highway Police OC Sohrab Ahmed Majumder.
According to local sources, Khadija Begum along with her family members was going to Dhaka for treatment from Wazirpur in Barisal. The ambulance lost control and fell into a roadside ditch in Kutubpur Boro Keshabpur area of the expressway.
At least three people were killed and two injured in road accidents in Dinajpur and Khulna.
In Dinajpur, two people were killed when their motorcycle collided with a trolley at Bhagalpur in Parbatipur of Dinajpur district on Thursday.
Parbatipur police station OC Moklesur Rahman said a man named Subhajit, 20, died on the spot in a head-on collision between a motorcycle and a trolley at Bhagalpur on the Parbatipur-Madhyapara road at around 11:30pm.
Injured Pritam, 30, died on the way to Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH).
The deceased Pritam was working at a Kurigram branch of Mercantile Bank. Another injured Anik has been admitted to RMCH.
In Khulna, a woman died in a road accident at College Junction in Meherpur town on Thursday night.
The deceased was identified as Marufi Khatun, wife of Golam Mostafa of Amdah village under Meherpur sadar upazila. They were returning to their village Amdaha with his wife Marufi Khatun on a motorcycle from Wapda junction via college junction.
When the motorcycle reached the college junction area, a bus coming from behind hit the motorcycle. Marufi Khatun, who was sitting on the back of the motorcycle, fell down from the motorcycle and died on the spot and Golam Mostafa was injured.
Sadar police said the injured Golam Mostafa was taken to the 250-bed General Hospital in Meherpur for primary treatment. The bus could not be identified yet.
