Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) announced its 9-hour anti-militant ‘Block Raid’ in the city ended empty on Tuesday as the law enforcers could not find any member of the banned radicals outfit.
The raid was conducted in the city’s Harogram, Purbapara, Tultulipara, Aliganj and Ranidighi areas around 9:30am and it was called off about 6:30pm, said our local correspondent quoting Police.
The Media personnel and outsiders were not allowed in the blocked area since the morning.
“We did not find anything in particular in the drive. We carried out the raid based on information,” Amir Jafar, Deputy Commissioner of the RMP, told the reporters in a press briefing at RMP media center on Tuesday evening.
The police had sealed off a kilometre radius area in the city, the DC said.
The drive was conducted as part of RMP’s “Anti-militancy Prevention and Awareness Campaign”, the police official said.
“We have decided to conduct the drive amid high security suspecting militant
activities in any of the houses here,” he said.
Detective Branch (DB), Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit (CTTC) and Special Weapon and Tactic Team (SWAT) were engaged in the drive, the Police official said.
The law enforcers searched every house, IfteKhair Alam, Assistant Commissioner of RMP. “The search began based on tenants’ information provided to the local police station.”
We have deployed additional police personnel in the areas around 11:30pm on Mon day and sealed off the areas early Tuesday, the AC said.
Abdur Rashid, owner of a one-storey house located in the area, said that police did not allow anybody in emergency. Hundreds of tenants were stranded in their residences during the raid, he said.
