Thousands of readymade garment workers demonstrated in the capital’s Uttara, Savar and Ashulia demanding payment of their wages.
In Uttara, more than one hundred garment workers blocked the road for non-payment of their three months’ arrears.
They took control of the road on Monday midday.
On the other hand, workers of four garment factories including three of the same owner took to the streets for the second consecutive day on Monday at Savar and Ashulia foe the same reason.
Hundreds of workers blocked the Hemayetpur-Singair Road in front of three factories at Savar’s Tetuljhora as part of their protest.
The owners shut down the factories in February without paying salaries for several months to their staff and workers, the agitators claimed.
Later, the administration gave notice several times that salaries would be paid, but did not keep their promise.
The protesters, as such, could not sit idle at their homes, risking corona virus infection.
The authorities on Sunday said that they would pay the dues on April 30 to the workers facing great difficulties for non-payment of their salaries for several months, said Associate President of National Garments Workers’ Federation Kabir Hossen.
The workers threatened to continue their demonstration until payment of their salaries, he added. On the other hand, hundreds of workers of a garment factory in Ashulia are demonstrating in front of the factory demanding their three months’ dues, said Khairul Mamun Mintu, organising secretary of Garments Workers’ Trade Union Centre.
“We are trying to resolve the problem,” said Jaane Alam Khan, Assistant Superintendent of Police of Dhaka Industrial Police-1 said.
