Workers of a Ready made Garments (RMG) factory staged demonstration demanding salary hike and other facilities by blocking the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway for an hour in Sadar upazila of Gazipur on Sunday morning.
The workers of Evince Textiles Limited blocked the road and staged demonstration in the morning to press home their demands. The blockade was lifted following police intervension.
Factory operator Shah Jamal alleged that the authorities do not pay the helpers’ salaries as per their previous declaration.
Workers staged work abstention and blocked the highway around 8.30 am, said Md Ali Jinnah,
Inspector of Joydevpur Police Station.
They lifted the blockade after getting assurance from the factory authorities, he said.
Additional cops personnel have been deployed in the area to avert the untoward situation.
“We pay Tk 6,354 to each helper as per rules, but they are demanding Tk 8,300. They are demanding other facilities also. We are trying to discuss the matter and convince them,” said Md, Jiahadul Isalm, General Manager of the factory.
