Workers of two garment factories have blocked Malibagh’s Chowdhury Para intersection to demand two months of back pay.
Traffic in the area ground to a halt from 10:30 am on Thursday due to the protest.
Hundreds of workers garment makers Luman Group and Lufa Group poured out into the streets in protest, said Mazharul Islam, assistant commissioner of the traffic police’s Rampura zone.
According to protesters, workers are owed at least a few months of back pay. Despite giving assurances to workers, the factory authorities failed to clear the due salaries which sparked the demonstrations in the streets around 10:30 am.
Traffic has been gridlocked on both sides of the road from Malibagh’s Abul Hotel to the rail gate.
“The workers had previously shown a lot of patience over their demands for unpaid salaries. They have now descended on the streets,” said Assistant Commissioner Mazharul Islam.
“But their actions are affecting ordinary people. We have asked them to leave the roads and take up their demands with the BGMEA.”
