RMG workers go on rampage in Gazipur; bus torched

Ready-made garments (RMG) workers torched a bus in Gazipur on rumours that a worker had been killed by a bus. In addition, several vehicles were vandalized in the incident.
The incident took place around 2pm on Tuesday (March 22) in front of the Columbia factory near Malek’s home in the metropolis.
Malek Khasru, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Basan Police Station confirmed the matter to the media saying that the workers were returning to the factory after lunch.
At that time, a passenger bus named Soukhin Paribahan struck Monir Hossain, an electrician at Alif Casual Wear Ltd in Gazipur, on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway.
He was rushed to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital in a critical condition. Later, he was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
Meanwhile, rumors spread in the area that the injured Monir Hossain died under a bus. The garment workers of different factories became upset. They started vandalizing vehicles on the road by throwing brickbats. At one stage, RMG workers blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway and set fire to a bus belonging to Soukhin Paribahan. The bus was completely burnt.
OC further said that after receiving the news, the police rushed to the spot and restored the discipline.
