Transport movement was disrupted in Dhaka’s Mirpur area for four hours as workers of different garment factories demonstrated at various points demanding their arrears by Saturday and resumption of long-distance bus service.
They also demanded the authorities extend their Eid holiday from three to at least seven days as they want to go to their village homes to celebrate Eid with their near and dear ones.
The workers started the demonstration at different points from Minpur-10 to Mirpur-14, causing traffic congestion on the roads.
Some of them also pelted brick chips and broke
windows of a number of vehicles, said Selimuzzaman, Officer-in-Charge of Kafrul Police Station.
The demonstrators also vandalised windows of a number of garment factories when they called the factory workers to stop work and join them but did not get any response.
“On information, police rushed to the spot and patiently handled the situation,” the OC said.
Around 1:00pm, police managed to convince the workers and cleared the roads, the police official said.
There are more than 30 garment factories in Mirpur area.
