Over one thousand workers of some readymade garment (RMG) factories on Tuesday staged a demonstration in city’s Kamalapur Railway Station area and vandalised at least 20 buses protesting the death of their fellow in a road accident.
They blocked the road in front of the Kamalapur Railway Station from 9:00am to 2:00pm demanding the arrest of the bus driver and compensation of the victim’s family.
Aklima Akhter, 25, a worker of Olio Apparel Limited, was killed and two others, including a physically challenged young man, were injured when a passenger bus hit them near the railway station on Monday evening.
Witnesses said, around 1,000 agitating workers of Olio Apparel Limited, Epoch Garments Limited and Supreme Apparel Limited took to the road near Kamalapur Railway Station at around 9:00am following the death news of their colleague Aklima Akhter in the road accident.
They put up barricade on the roads at various points from Arambagh intersection to Kamalapur level crossing, TT Para level crossing to Kamalapur crossing and Shahjahanpur intersection to Kamalapur crossing disrupting vehicular movement in the area for about five hours.
The vehicular movement in the area came to normal at around 2:00pm after the workers lifted their blockade, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) media wing Deputy Commissioner Muntasirul Islam.
“Being informed, police rushed to the area and brought the situation under control. Additional police personnel have been deployed in the area,” the police official said.
A case was filed with Shahjahanpur Police Station in this connection on Tuesday. The driver of the bus has been made accused in the case.
The injured were admitted to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) in critical condition.
