Hundreds of garment workers blocked road in the capital’s Mirpur-12 area for three hours and vandalised vehicles demanding immediate payment of their arrear salary and allowances on Friday.
About 500 to 600 workers of Trust Trousers Ltd started demonstration at 9am and it continued till 12 noon.
The workers had an altercation with the factory authorities over the payment of compensation for several days as they were in fear of losing jobs due to relocation of their factory from Mirpur to another place.
Some bus workers hurled abusive words at the
demonstrators and the clash began.
On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
The workers said that Trust Trousers Ltd would be relocated from the Mirpur area without workers’ knowledge. “The factory authorities want to sack us. We have known that the incumbent workers will not get any entrance in the new place. So we are in fear of losing job,” they said.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Assistant Deputy Commissioner (Pallabi zone) Kamal Hossain said the protesting workers withdrew road blockade after four hours getting an assurance from the local MP Elias Uddin Mollah over their demands.
A meeting will be held on Saturday between the authorities and the workers to solve the problems, he said.
