Workers of a garment factory in Tongi blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway for an hour today demanding full salary of the current month and 12-day vacation for the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.
The workers from Viyellatex Limited located in Sataish area gathered in front of the factory around 9:00am and blocked the highway around 10:00am, reports our Gazipur correspondent.
The blockade created a gridlock of nearly three kilometres on both sides of the highway.
However, police dispersed the agitating
workers by firing tear shells and cleared the road around 11:00am.
The factory authorities recently announced that the workers will get 15 days’ salary, Eid bonus of July and eight-day vacation on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha, a worker said wishing anonymity.
But the workers have been demanding their full salary of the current month, including full bonus, and the 12-day Eid holiday for some days, he said.
