Hundreds of Readymade Garment (RMG) workers have staged demonstration on Progati Sarani Road to protest the brutal killing of their colleague.
Soon after spreading death news of their colleague one Delwar Hossain on Thursday, they blocked the road from Malibagh level crossing to Baridahra for about five hours.
Following the road blocking, the sufferings of the commuters mounted on the Progati Sarani and many more streets in the capital from 1:30pm to 6:00pm. Earlier injured Delwar succumbed to death at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) around 1:15pm, Police said.
But the agitators claimed that Delwar was stabbed to death by the guards and other staff of EG Fashions on charge of theft of clothes around 5:00am. They tactfully sent the confined Delwar’s body to DMCH by showing him alive. The body was sent to DMCH morgue for an autopsy, said Inbal Hossain, Inspector of Hatirjheel Police Station.
Anisur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner of Tejgaon Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said that they picked up at least three staff of the garment, but the names of the persons could not be disclosed in the sake of the investigation.
Delwar lynching has been reported on suspicion of theft in EF Fashion garment in the city’s West Hazipara area, the police official said.
“Workers and employees of the factory have beaten up the man on suspicion of stealing along with the factory’s security guard 28-year-old Moyeen,” he said.
On information, police rescued Delwar and sent him to DMCH, where doctors declared him dead, Anisur Rahman said.
“Moyeen is currently under police custody. He was given primary treatment at DMCH. An investigation has been launched,” said a police officer.
