A readymade garment (RMG) worker succumbed to his injuries at a hospital after he was reportedly beaten up and hacked by a group of fellow-workers near their factory here on Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Swapan, a sampleman of Dynamic Dhaka Sweaters Factory at Ulail and a resident of adjacent Nama Genda, Savar.
Witnesses said workers of Dynamic Dhaka Sweaters Factory staged a demo in front of the factory building in on Tuesday morning, following the hanging of a closure notice by the factory owners.
During the protest, a group of infuriated workers
mistook Swapan as an informer of the owners and beat him up brutally near the factory building.
Seriously injured, Swapan was taken to Enam Medical Hospital where he died around noon.
The factory authorities hung the closure notice on Tuesday following an alleged labour unrest.
Police said the workers of Dynamic Dhaka Sweaters Factory took to the streets demanding an increase in the piece-rate of their work as well as the payment of their outstanding salaries after the factory was declared closed for the day by the authorities.
Meanwhile, police arrested three people in connection with the killing of Swapan.
Besides, the agitated workers gathered in front of the residence of Dr Enamur Rahman, local MP, and continued their protest after police dispersed them from Nama Genda area.
Following assurance by the MP of fulfilling their demand, the workers withdrew their demonstration.
The factory workers have been demonstrating for several days demanding their outstanding salaries and an increase in the piece-rate of their work.
